Time Saver Tuesday

I'm a little late in posting today, been super busy preparing for our kids combined birthday party this weekend. Our time saver tip for today is menu planning. I plan out dinner menu for a month at a time. At the beginning of each month I sit down with my calendar and menu planner to write out a daily menu for the entire month.

I use a weekly menu planner and keep it posted under my calendar on the fridge. I write down a daily dinner with any special details included. If I plan to have "leftovers" I write, "Choice Night" on that day. Also my husband likes to cook and has offered to cook 1 meal a week, so on Thursdays I write, "Daddy's choice."

You may think its crazy to do a month at a time, but it is such a TIME SAVER! I don't have to think about what I'm going to fix for dinner each day. Not only does this help me prepare my shopping list, but it also gives me a great overview of our months schedule. Instead of figuring out what we our going to eat for dinner each day I can get some of the items prepped are ready the night before or the morning of. I've found this to be a HUGE TIME SAVER for our family.

Time Saver Tuesday

Mornings can be a stressful start to a new day. Maybe the alarm didn't go off, or the kids are sick, or something goes wrong with the house, or you are just running late. By planning ahead you can minimize the stress and chaos when something goes awry.

Working full time, getting myself ready and getting 2 kids dressed and fed by 7:30 each day can be challenging. In order to ensure we all make it in time I start the night before. Every evening I start by picking and laying out the kids clothes for the next day, which includes socks, shoes, underwear, pants and a shirt and if needed a jacket. I don't want to leave anything out, or it could be an issue in the morning. I also plan out my wardrobe and lay it out in my closet. I hang my towel on the shower wall so I don't have to think about getting that out in the morning when I am half asleep. All of the lunches are made and ready to go. Breakfast is also planned out by putting out the necessary plate/bowl and utensils needed and all sippy cups are prepared and ready in the fridge.

Sometimes it gets old to get all of this ready the night before, but the morning always seems to be CRAZY and by planning the night before some of the drama and chaos can be averted simply because I had it done already. If you feel like your mornings are out of control, try planning the night before by making lunches and laying out your clothes so that your mornings can be less stressful.

Time Saver Tuesday!

I thought it would be fun to start a weekly feature. I'm all about saving money and time in everything I do. Shortcuts are GREAT! So "Time Saver Tuesday" will be a new feature each week.

Working full time on top of being a mother and maintaining a home can get very hectic at times. Those tasks that get tossed on the back burner when life gets hectic are important but there's not any time for them. One of those "little tasks" is plucking my eyebrows. I know right, how silly? I'm one of those few people who still plucks my eyebrows instead of waxing. I've had them waxed a few times and HATED it, so I still pluck!

Anyway, if I were to keep them on the back burner until I had the time, I'd look like Chewbacca. Ideally if the world were perfect, I'd have a quiet afternoon to sit around and pluck my eyebrows every week without any interruptions, perfect lighting, and fabulous tweezers. HA! Wouldn't that be wonderful! Since I don't have that luxury and I assume most of you don't either, I had to figure out an alternate plan.

I am an itinerant teacher and throughout my week I go to 11 different schools. Since I drive all over town, sometimes I have a few quiet moments in my car before I head into my next class. One day last year I was looking in my car mirror and noticed how "bushy" my eyebrows were and wished I had some tweezers to fix my 'hairy' problem. The next day I stuck my tweezers in my purse just in case I had time. Sure enough I had about 5 minutes before class so I pulled out my tweezers and plucked away. I noticed it was the perfect lighting with the sun shining through my window right onto my face for finding those hard to find hairs. I ended up heading into class that day a little less hairy and I had 5 minutes of "pampering" myself uninterrupted.

Time Saver Tip: Keep a pair of tweezers in your purse so the next time you find yourself feeling a bit 'hairy' you can pluck those stray hairs away while waiting in the car.

Who doesn't LOVE FREE stuff? I mean seriously you can't turn down something that is free right? Even if you don't personally use it, you could give it away, or donate it to a shelter, or LOVE INC. etc. There are plenty of ways to use FREE stuff.

Here is some of what I've gotten for FREE lately just for signing up on the company websites for their special programs. The product will come directly to you and almost always a coupon is included with the FREE product. You may be thinking, I don't want a bunch of junk mail from signing up, but most company's allow you to choose to receive their newsletters in the sign-up process. When I started doing a lot of sign-ups, I set up another email address specifically for couponing, special company programs etc. That way I still have my personal email separate from my couponing stuff.

Most of the items I've received are great for travel, but some are full size products. Some other items that aren't shown in the photo are, 7 Pampers diapers, South Beach bar, and Suave lotion. If you like FREE things, this is a great way to earn yourself some FREE products.

Welcome back! We had a great vacation and some super fun play time in the snow and at Disneyland. Sad for it to end, but glad to be back in a routine. I was bummed to miss out on some great shopping trips last week so wast extra eager to get my papers on Sunday and look for those great deals this week.

My first super EXCITING deal was at Target. In their add they had several Hasbro games on sale for $7 one of which was Connect 4. My son loves this game and ours broke a few months ago, so he's been asking for a new one. This was so exciting because I had a $4 off manufacturer coupon which would make it $3 after the sale and coupon. BUT WAIT, I remembered 2 weeks ago Target send out a booklet of Target Coupons and in it was a $3 off Hasbro game and Connect 4 was listed on the coupon. So that meant, I could get the game for FREE!!!!!

I organized my coupons (I had 2 sets which meant I could get 2 games for FREE) and headed to the store. I picked up 2 Connect 4 games (which by the way weren't marked as on sale it still said $14.99, but I knew better from looking through their add) and headed to the register. I looked for the 2 cashiers I normally like to use at Target and didn't see either one so got in line with the only available cashier. She rang up my total at $15 something. I handed her my 4 coupons and she scanned 2 of them and then said, you can't use 2 coupons on 1 item. I kindly responded by explaining one was a manf. coupon and the other a Target coupon and that their coupon policy stated I could stack a manf. coupon and a store coupon on 1 item. She visibly got irritated with me and told me NO. I nicely explained the same thing again and that's when she called over her "manager" he told me the same thing, which I again stated what THEIR coupon policy was. I knew this because I had a copy of it with me in my coupon binder!! So he said well scan the coupon and see what the register says, and it said nothing! Which means, the coupons worked. If a coupon isn't correct, the register will beep at you, almost always the register never lies. My heart was beating so fast during the whole thing, but I remained calm, stood my ground because I had done my research and knew what I was allowed to do in their store and if paid off. My total cost for 2 games which would have been over $30 after tax ended up costing me $.29!!!! WOOOHOOOO!! I was so proud of myself and so frustrated at the same time, but I kept my cool and maybe she will remember next time what her company policy is for stacking coupons.

Moral of the story, remain calm, do your research ahead of time on what the store coupon policies are, and stand your ground if you know you are right!!

3 Coupon Inserts This Sunday!

This week we will be getting up to 3 coupon inserts the Smart Source , P&G and the Red Plum. Listed below are the possible coupons you might find for your area. Please note that these coupons vary by area and by paper….larger cities tend to get more coupons/dollar amount may vary also. But this list gives you and idea of what will be in most areas. I usually buy 3 papers each week - Porterville Recorder, Fresno Bee, and L.A. Times. This way I get multiple copies of the coupons. I also have a few people who do not want their coupons and will bring me their inserts each week which gives me a total of about 5 copies of each insert per week. Having multiple copies of a coupon will give you the opportunity to stock up on an item when it is on sale and at rock bottom price so you don't have to pay full price for it later.

Why Coupon?

I've had a lot of people asking me questions about my recent adventure into the coupon world so I thought I would pass on some of the information I've found as I researched the benefits of using coupons myself.

The basics of couponing - stock up on products when they are on sale combined with a coupon to receive the item for FREE or almost FREE so you don't have to pay full price for it later. Typically coupons have a 3-4 month cycle before you will see a similar one. If I'm stockpiling items when they are on sale and not paying full price then I'm saving money even though I'm buying more, I'm paying less for more product. Typically pantry items have a long shelf life, so buying 10 boxes of cereal seems crazy at first but if they don't expire for 6-12 months then using them up before that date seems fairly easy to do. The freezer is also a great place to store almost anything that needs to be refrigerated, even milk. Before you know it you will be saving between 50-90% at the grocery store! It’s all about shopping with coupons while a product is on sale- and STOCKING UP so you don’t have to buy something when it’s not cheap or free.

You may also be thinking, would she really be buying that stuff if she didn't have a coupon? I can honestly say almost everything I've bought since I started has been stuff we use. However, even if its not something you normally use but can get it for FREE or almost free, (and still stay within our budget cause we are paying less on groceries/toiletries with coupons/sale prices then before and eventually will decrease our budget) then whats the problem? I have a TON of coupons I probably won't use because its just stuff I don't like or want. I figured I would just throw the unwanted coupons in the trash until I found out about a program that helps our military families. Any unwanted or expired coupons can used by the military families for up to 2 months after the expiration date at the commissaries on the base. How awesome is that! I already have a HUGE stack of coupons to mail off to them.

So what about the rest of the coupons? Some of the coupons I have are for things I like and haven't purchased due to high prices. Others are for things I've heard about and would like to try. If I can get something for FREE or close to FREE, then why not try it. If there are items I can get for free and I have no plans to use but they were FREE then I can use those to donate to a relief fund like Haiti, LOVE INC., military families, local charities like a home for battered women, homeless shelter, and so on. The point is, IT'S FREE, if you don't like it or don't want it, then donate it!

I am excited to start this new blog! I started a new journey last month in the world of couponing. I am super excited about it and can't stop talking about the incredible deals I've found so far. Jonathan thinks I am addicted and a bit obsessed. Now when I go shopping, I find myself a little "high" afterwards because of the great savings I've found through couponing.
